In which I talk about Yoko Ono and butts...
Maybe I shouldn't do interviews.
I am not great at answering questions on the spot, at least out loud. So when I had the chance to talk about CAN YOU IMAGINE? THE ART AND LIFE OF YOKO ONO, my new picture book with Yas Imamura, the conversations went by in a panicky flash. I was left remembering all the weird things I said.
Like, butts.
It’s true Yoko Ono made a movie, “Film No. 4 (Bottoms),” that emphasizes our shared humanity through the rear end. I didn’t think that would be the thing I would emphasize when talking about her inspiring life and what it means to children. And yet, here we are.
You can have a listen on Stephanie Affinito’s amazing KidLit Love podcast. The questions are great. The answers all begin with “Yeah!” (Sorry, Stephanie.)
I was also thrilled to talk to Bianca Schulze of The Children's Book Review for her Growing Readers podcast.
In that one, I revealed that although I do not sing karaoke, my husband I have designated the Bobby Brown song “Roni” as the one that we would bust out if called upon. (Why? I truly cannot remember. But now that it’s out there, we need to work on our synchronized dance routine.)
Bianca asked such thoughtful questions and I got to talk about Yoko's legacy, the beautiful art by Yas Imamura, and my writing life, such as it is. You can listen to our conversation or read the transcript.
I didn’t even mention butts that time.
I’ll have a chance to redeem myself soon on my friend Stephen Robinson’s Play Typer Guy podcast. Will there be bottoms? Will there be Bobby Brown? Will I answer every question starting with “Yeah!”
Butt of course.
